Metered franking is a way of paying for your letter postage without the need of buying and sticking stamps. Franked mail is done by a machine, called a postage meter or franking machine, owned by a business or company. The cost of the postage is pre-paid and input into the machine remotely from which it is deducted during use. Instead of a postage stamp the machine imprints an insignia mark with date and postage value on the envelopes along with business logo, advertising or customised message.
